Tauriel Cosplay - Leather Bodice Progress!

Hey friends and followers!

So, as I said in my last post, some fun stuff has been happening lately in relation to my Tauriel cosplay. About a week ago, I received the faux leather vinyl for the leather bodice/armor, and I've been doing some work on it! :D

The leather I bought is actually upholstery-grade, but it's turning out really well. I decided to buy that kind because it's thicker than apparel-grade leather (and cheaper :p), so it'll look more like real leather (without having to use craft foam underneath.) But let me tell you, though. It is a pain to work with... my sewing machine hates it. xD

But, like I said, it's turning out pretty well! Here's what it looks like so far:

Yes, obviously it still needs some work done to perfect it. (Oh, and btw, the actual color is closest to the top right pic.) The princess seams are a little off, it's an inch or two too long, and also a bit too large overall. I also need to figure out what I should do about the edge... "To hem, or not to hem. That is the question." ;)

So, yeah! That's what's been going on lately in my little world of cosplay. ;) I have the two back panels cut, and so just need to sew those onto the front, make the minor adjustments I mentioned previously, and then of course add the grommets and lacing in the back. I'm getting close! :D

And one more thing before I head off - DID ANYONE ELSE PRACTICALLY DIE YESTERDAY DUE TO THE NEW DESOLATION OF SMAUG TRAILER THAT RELEASED????? EEEEEPPPPPP!!! :D :D :D It was just so good. Oh. my. word. :D My very favorite-est part of the entire trailer? "Well, thief. Where are you? Come now. Don't be shy. Step into the light!"

  2. hey! I've been watching your progress on tauriel's cosplay (that is, amazing!) and i've been meaning to make a cosplay as well. i'm kinda new to the all-by-my-self cosplay thing, i was wondering if you got any advices! and also if you have any patterns that could help, especially for the "leather bodice" you are actually doing with a great job! ^^
thanks again and keep going! (sorry if my english is in a way kind of wibbly wobbly, i'm french :) ) <3

    1. Ahh bonjour! :D Awh, thanks so much! ;) That's awesome, you should totally make a costume! You'll definitely have fun. :D As for advice for the bodice... well, see, I never found a pattern for the bodice that would be perfect, so I ended up just coming up with my own. So, if you want to try that, I would say to make it first out of some sort of scrap fabric, and just pin it together, and then use those pieces as your pattern for the real bodice. But, if that sounds too hard, you could try either of these patterns: McCall's 4107 or Butterick 4669. They wouldn't be exactly correct, but would definitely work and look great! :) Hope this helped!

  4. I've just found this blog, and I'm pretty sure that you are my long lost sister. :P

I was wondering what you're doing with your hair for your Tauriel cosplay. I'm planning to cosplay her for Halloween this year (and then wear the costume to the Hobbit: TDOS midnight showing). Are you wearing a wig? Dying your hair? Just leaving it how it is?

    Thanks! :)

    1. Hahah! I just went to your "about me," and yep, I'd agree. ;D And that is totally awesome that you're going to cosplay her!! *highfive.* :D You must let me know how it all turns out. (:
As for my hair... yeah, I debated that for quite a while. But, in the end, I decided to just leave it as it is (light brown, fairly long). To me, wigs just look unnatural, and I prefer to avoid hair dye... :p I'm planning on braiding my hair in the same style as hers, though. Sure, I won't look EXACTLY like Tauriel, but I'm cool with that. I kind of like the idea of just being me -- Mirkwood elf style, of course. ;)

    2. I will be sure to let you know! :)

My hair is about the same color as yours. That would be the easiest... (to style, and to wear.) Thanks for the tips! ;)

  5. Hello! Your costume looks AMAZING! I've talked to you on Pinterest. :) I am stuck on the vambraces though. I haven't found a pattern that looks anything like hers, and I am unable to find pictures that shown them very well so that I could draft my own. Any ideas? Or, if you have made some, could you post about how you did so? Thanks!

    1. Ah, yes, of course! Thanks for commenting! :D And thanks about the costume! ;) Mhmm...so, I'm still trying to decide if I want to deviate from her costume and make a different style of bracers I found (that I simply adore!). But, in the meantime, I did find a person who made some based on her costume. You can find both the tutorial, and a pretty good shot of the bracers on my Tauriel Cosplay Pinterest board. :) Hope they'll help! :D

  6. Hi! I'm not sure if you'll see this comment or not, but I'm wondering how you decided on what pieces to cut for the bodice. Did you modify a pattern? Thank you!
